It’s Valentine’s Day.
You rushed into shops and online stores to find the perfect gift for your love.

A day we dedicate to love.
But we often overlook the most important relationship: The one with yourself.

And while Valentine’s Day is dedicated to people in a relationship, understanding how we show up for others in general is the fundamental shift we should prioritise, even if we are single.

I know, “what does it have to do with photography”? One may ask.

Well, for one, Live Intentionally won’t always have to do with photography directly.. but stay with me, because somehow it has (a lot)… more on this later.

One of the best example to look at self-love or self-compassion (I will unpack the difference in a minute) is the oxygen mask metaphor.

Research shows that self-care isn’t selfish but sustainable and necessary in order to show up for others. Without nurturing our own mental, emotional and physical health, we eventually run out of air.

While the difference between self-love and self-compassion is subtle, it’s significant.

Self-love is the active part: everything you do to support your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. It involves commitment, discipline, and most importantly, action, like setting boundaries, following your joy, prioritising health, being vulnerable in relationships.

Self-compassion, on the other hand, is milder and more internal. It’s not so much about what you do, but how you relate to yourself through difficult times. While self-love can require effort, self-compassion is the soothing presence that stays with you when things fall apart.

Studies show that compassion-based meditation actually decreases the amygdala activation, which is responsible to suffering, reducing anxiety and fear responses.

Daily Practices: Your Self-Compassion Toolkit:

Here are evidence-based practices that cultivate both self-love and self-compassion:

Walking: A walk provides mental clarity and calms racing thoughts through its neurological effects.​

Journaling: Expressive writing activates the prefrontal cortex while dampening amygdala activity. It literally rewires your brain for better emotional regulation.

Yoga and Meditation: Both practices increase self-compassion and mindfulness while reducing stress.

All these practices activate self-compassion’s core components.
They create space for mindfulness (awareness of what you’re experiencing), reinforce common humanity (recognising everyone struggles), and cultivate self-kindness (treating yourself gently), the three components that Dr Kristin Neff demonstrates in her framework.

And while we are also integrating photography to these practices, going out with your camera today is both self-love and self-compassion in action.
The intentional choice to take time for yourself, to shoot, to develop film, well that's self-love.
But the way you approach it matters too: Can you photograph without harsh self-judgment about your images? Can you stay present with what you see rather than what you think you should capture?
Guess what? that's self-compassion.

Photography becomes not just a practice, but a way of relating to yourself with kindness.

So, this Valentine’s Day, choose one practice that resonates:

A mindful (photo) walk, journaling about what you experienced during the walk, or about yourself, a gentle yoga session, or a meditation focused on self-compassion.

The practice itself doesn’t matter, but the intention behind it: to treat yourself with the same care, patience, and understanding you’d offer someone you deeply love.

First mist of the year. Walking through clouds that decided to visit the ground.

Have you ever looked into your child's eyes and suddenly realised how much you've been missing?

After spending over 30 years in the music industry as an audio mastering engineer, I reached a breaking point that I couldn't even listen to music anymore. But more devastatingly, I couldn't truly hear my children's voices either.

You know those moments:

"Daddy, look at this!"

"Not now, I have urgent emails."

"Dad, can you play with me?"

"I have audio work that can't wait until tomorrow."

"Can you watch me do this trick?"

"Maybe later, okay?"

But later never comes, does it? Because childhood doesn't wait. It moves forward relentlessly, whether we're paying attention or not.

I still remember the night I sat at my kitchen table, scrolling through photos on my library, and realised I had thousands of pictures of my children I couldn't recall the actual moments those photos represented. I had been physically present but emotionally absent, my mind always back in the studio.

That's when I knew. In December 2023, with hands trembling slightly, I sent the email I never thought I'd write—announcing my indefinite retirement from the music industry.

Finding Myself Again: A step and frame at the time.

The truth is, my transformation began years before that email, during those walks I would take between audio mastering sessions. At first, they were just an way for me to reset my ears. But the more I did it, the more I started to feel it as an escape.

No podcasts, no music, just silence.
Just moving my body to get the blood flowing before the next studio session.
But in that silence, something profound happened.

I began to truly notice the world around me:

The way my son's eyes crinkle exactly like mine when he laughs. How my youngest's voice changes slightly when he's telling the truth versus a tale. The sound of our home settling at night, a different kind of symphony than the ones I mixed in the studio. The warmth of small hands reaching for mine, expecting them to be there.

One day, I started taking pictures with my phone during these walks. Not to create something perfect or commercially viable but just to capture moments that moved me. One snap after another, and soon I'd fallen straight into street photography, finding stories in the everyday lives of strangers that reminded me of the stories unfolding in my own home that I'd been too busy to notice.

What began as a way to reset my ears evolved into a healing practice that slowly opened my eyes and most importantly, my mind, to what I was about to lose forever: the irreplaceable moments of my own family's story.

When the Camera became the extension of my mind.

Photography didn't just change my career. It healed me and my family.

Through my viewfinder, I rediscovered my children. Not the hurried, half-listened-to versions of them I'd been settling for between deadlines, but their full, complex, miraculous selves. The camera forced me to stop, to truly see, to be fully present in a way I hadn't been for years.

I remember the first time I spent an entire afternoon just photographing my boys playing in my backyard. No agenda. No interruptions. No emails. Just watching and witnessing. My oldest son looked up at one point, caught my eye behind the camera, and said, "I like when you look at me like that, Dad." I nearly broke down right there.

He didn't care about perfect photos. He just wanted to be seen.

Street photography became my technical training ground, but family became my emotional education. Through documenting strangers, I learned timing and composition. But through documenting my family, I learned to see with my heart:

• The fleeting shadow of vulnerability that crosses my child's face when trying something new

• The silent language of touch between brothers who were fighting just moments before

• The miracle of ordinary moments—breakfast spills, bedtime negotiations, homework frustrations—that I now understand are actually extraordinary

• The way time moves differently for children—how a minute of undivided attention can fill their emotional tanks for hours

With each click of the shutter, I was saying to my family: This moment matters. You matter. I see you.

And in being truly seen, they began to flourish in ways I hadn't noticed before. My once-shy son started sharing more. My youngest began seeking me out for conversations.

Photography didn't just document our family's story—it helped us write a better one.

The Missing Chapter in Your Family's Story (It Might Be You)

There's a moment that breaks my heart every time I work with families. It usually happens during our consultation, when I ask: "Who takes most of the family photos?"

One parent immediately raises their hand, often with a mix of pride and resignation. The other parent usually laughs and adds, "Yeah, they're never actually in any of our pictures."

I know that pain intimately.

One evening, my child asked me a question that stopped me cold: "Dad, why aren't you in our photo books? Didn't you love us back then too?"

The innocence of the question nearly shattered me. Of course I loved them—fiercely, completely. But the evidence told a different story. In their visual history, I was just a occasional guest star, not a main character in their lives.

How many birthdays, first steps, holiday mornings, and ordinary Tuesday afternoons was I technically present for, but missing from their visual memory? How would they remember their childhood decades from now, when memories fade and photos become the primary anchor to the past?

For solo parents, this absence is even more profound. When you're both the memory-keeper AND the primary caregiver, who's preserving YOUR relationship with your children? Who's documenting those precious moments of connection that your children will treasure when they're grown?

These realisations transformed documentary family photography from a creative outlet into a calling with profound purpose. Because every parent deserves to exist in their family's visual history.

Why Each Family's Story Deserves to Be Told

I've heard the same heartbreaking regret from so many parents:

"I wish I had more photos from when they were little."

"I can barely remember what their voice sounded like at that age."

"It all went by so fast, and now I'm struggling to recall the details."

There's a particular kind of grief that comes from realizing certain moments are gone forever, with nothing tangible to bring them back. I know that ache. I've felt it myself.

Today, I create documentary family photographs and videos not just because I love photography, but because I understand what's at stake when we fail to preserve these moments:

The way your toddler makes up songs while playing alone, thinking no one is listening.

How your tween still sleeps with their childhood stuffed animal but hides it when friends come over.

The warmth and perfect fit of those little hands in yours—a feeling that changes subtly as they grow, and one day will be gone. Documenting these moments will always remind me of this feeling, the most profound connection I've ever known.

The precise way your family navigates your morning chaos—a beautiful dance of personalities that will never be replicated exactly this way again.

The look on your face when you watch your child overcome a challenge—a mixture of pride and bittersweet recognition that they need you a little less today than yesterday.

For solo parents, these moments carry even more weight—you're the constant, the foundation, the one who witnesses it all. Your connection with your children is a unique story that deserves to be honored and preserved.

Documentary family photography isn't a luxury—it's a form of time travel for your future self and your children. It gives them "something tangible to show how they lived and loved each other and grew up together"—proof that ordinary days were actually extraordinary.

It's not just about pretty pictures. It's about:

• Capturing the love that exists in mundane moments

• Preserving the family dynamics that make your relationships unique

• Documenting the small gestures that speak volumes about your connection

• Showing children they are valued exactly as they are, not just when they're "picture perfect"

• Creating visual evidence of a parent's devotion that children can return to throughout their lives.
  

From One Parent's Heart to Yours

I still remember photographing a mother and her three-year-old daughter last spring. The little girl was having a complete meltdown over a broken crayon. The mom looked at me apologetically, clearly mortified that this was happening during their session.

"Should we take a break?" she whispered.

I shook my head and kept shooting as she gathered her crying child into her arms. What followed was pure magic—the way she stroked her daughter's hair, the whispered reassurances, the gradual calming, the tearful giggles that eventually emerged.

When I delivered those images, that mother cried. "I've never seen myself as a mother like this before," she told me. "I always thought I was failing her during these moments. But looking at these photos... I can see that I'm actually exactly what she needs."

That's the power of documentary family photography—it shows us the beauty in moments we might otherwise dismiss as imperfect or ordinary.

My journey from audio engineer to documentary family photographer wasn't planned. It emerged from my own healing—from learning to truly see my family after years of being physically present but emotionally absent.
As my life evolved into a blended family with my teenage son navigating his own journey (documenting him now requires a different kind of patience and respect for his emerging independence), I've discovered how documentary photography adapts to each family stage. Whether capturing my teen's rare unguarded moments or the new dynamics of our patchwork family, the essence remains the same—preserving authentic connections that evolve but never diminish in importance.

When I photograph your family now, I bring every lesson from my own journey:

• The patience to wait for authentic moments to unfold naturally

• The awareness to notice the subtle ways love manifests in your family

• The understanding that the "imperfect" moments often contain the deepest truths

• The perspective of a parent who knows how fleeting childhood really is

For solo parents, I bring special recognition of the unique bond you share with your children—how you are their entire world, and how crucial it is to document that relationship from both sides of the camera.

Your family's story isn't just worth telling—it's worth remembering. Not through stiff, posed portraits, but through images that capture who you truly are when no one's watching.

The moments you think don't matter? They're everything.

The exhausted goodnight kiss. The Saturday morning pancake disasters. The tears over homework. The silent car rides where important truths are finally shared. The ordinary Tuesday dinners that you'll desperately wish you could return to someday.

These Moments Are Happening Right Now

I won't ask you to "say cheese." I won't tell your children to stand still. I won't suggest you all wear matching outfits.

Instead, I'll simply document your love in action—the real, raw, beautiful story of your family exactly as you are today.

Because tomorrow, they'll be different. And so will you.

This is one of my favorite things I like to do when I’m walking in the cities, among pure street photography.
And what I mean by that is that I really love watching how the light and shadow are playing together and reveal elements in the shop’s windows.
Some shops are really creative and offer beautiful, colorful étalages. (By all means, I’m happy to teach you a bit of French.)

It’s another great way to be intentional and mindful when you’re doing your photo walks.
And to be honest, this practice will save you lots of money, haha.

But Dan, how can this assignment help you with your documentary work, you may ask?
Well, actually, a lot. Just like street photography did too. Capturing stories, improving composition skills, learning to react faster, playing with layering, and so much more.

This exercise can be done in daylight but also in the night.

I love to walk around and observe how the sun reflects on objects, how the shadow is helping create a scene.
Then, I add some extra layers, like this lady who just popped while I was framing the shot.

Or this colorful frame with this lovely Dalmatian dog enjoying a moment of pure calmness. I love exploring color theory all the time (and love seeing that people incorporate it into their window displays accordingly).

Dear Spring,

I have been waiting for you.

You are my favorite part of the year. I mean, summer is delicious too, and I see it more as an extension of spring. Winter has its beauty, with its magical foggy moments, but I miss the bright days far too much. And when you bring days like we had last weekend, close to 20°C, it can't go wrong.
Obviously, depending on where you live, it might make you laugh 😅, but where I'm living, we all lack vitamin D.

So, with a very big smile and my heart fully charged with positive energy, I had a lovely walk capturing life as it happens.

Visual storytelling… Something I've deeply missed. It will now be an essential part of my work going forward. While I still appreciate fine art in black and white, I'll be channeling less energy into it.

I believe that Life Stories Matter. This is why I've named this section accordingly.

You know what I've discovered? You don't need to travel far to find stories worth telling. They're happening right around the corner, in your neighborhood, on familiar streets you've walked a hundred times. I used to think the most compelling images came from exotic places, but now I see the extraordinary hiding in our ordinary corners.

All these photos were taken within a few kilometers of home. No passport required, just open eyes. The same streets we walk every day are filled with fleeting moments that deserve to be preserved before they're gone forever.

These life moments: The brief interactions between strangers, silent expressions caught in passing, fragments of everyday beauty… They reveal our shared humanity. Through my viewfinder, I'm searching for those honest glimpses that tell larger stories.

We walk past hundreds of stories every day without seeing them.
The elderly couple still holding hands after decades. The child discovering rain puddles for perhaps the first time. The moment of kindness between strangers that lasts only seconds but speaks volumes about who we are.

This is how I see the world. This same eye for authentic moments is what I bring to every session, whether I'm documenting family connections or a business's living culture. The ability to spot and capture what matters is universal.

My goal is to document these authentic moments worth preserving because time doesn't pause, whether they happen on busy streets or in your personal spaces.

I visited Berlin many times back when I was working in the music industry. Many of my musician friends also moved to the city to develop their journey.
At the end of 2022, I decided to join a workshop by famous fine-art street photography artist Mark Fearnley, whose dramatic black and white compositions have influenced countless photographers, including myself. (picture of his work below).

It was a sunny September day, though not very warm for that time of year. We met at the Museum Island area, where I connected with the other participants. I knew instantly we were a group of like-minded fellow street photographers. Though I'm typically a lone wolf (aren't we all, as street photographers?), something told me this would be a special day. There's nothing quite like being in the company of people who speak your language.
The level was high. Most participants were established photographers. But the beauty in this is that no one is looking at the follower numbers you have on IG.
That’s to me the essence of a non-zero-sum game community.

(PSST: I already did my warmup session before the meeting point :) That's our secret.)

Mark is a really cool guy. I like his vision and how he sees the world through photography. He also explains very well what he sees. His approach taught me to:

• Look for dramatic light and shadow interplay

• Wait patiently for the perfect human element

• Trust my instincts while staying open to feedback

Of course, you should ideally already know how to use a camera, which, luckily, I did a bit.

I discovered Berlin like I never had before, seeing familiar streets transformed through new techniques.

I think these are some of my favorite pictures I've taken in my career so far.

But perhaps the most unexpected revelation was about community itself.
This revelation transformed my approach to photography (and creatives solopreneurs)
It's why I've built my own photography community where we share techniques, locations, and honest feedback without fear.

When photographers support each other rather than keeping their "secrets," everyone's work improves exponentially.

I would say it’s 80% B&W and 20% colors.

Believe it or not, I always shoot in B&W mode on my digital cameras even if the image is intended to be in color. (Except obviously with the Q2 Monochrom 😅)
I learned to see colors in monochrome. Or better said, to know how to compose and meter the image so that the colors will pop.

But today I’m not so much about talking about me, but about you guys.

The shadow play in the house.

A very easy way to start noticing and being more present is definitely in your home.

Start noticing the shadows and light, like I did with the chains of our industrial lamps that are projected against the wall, produced by the warm morning light.

I have a disco ball on the shelf. (and an orange mushroom lamp)
Everyone loves this disco ball. Especially Bowie, our Australian Shepherd.
It’s fascinating to notice how the light is reflected and how its colors change differently on the wall during the changing of seasons.

A bit similar to the first picture. But this time, with the flags from a birthday party.

And last but certainly not least, I noticed how the lightbulb was printed on the wall.

It’s a simple and beautiful exercise that you can do every day and throughout the whole year, observing how the shadow and light dance in your home during the four seasons.

Summer 2021.
Remember Covid?
I bet you do.

But Summer 2021…. We slowly started to get our lives back, for most of us. I rented a VW California for one week to go on some mini road trips in Belgium. That was my first time. I always wanted to try this experience, and fortunately, my oldest son did too.
And one of the trips included an Urbex. But an easy one, because my son was 11 at that time. I had a fairly vague location of the place, so we knew we had to walk a bit. I parked the van, put the cameras in the bag, and off we went.

We walked around for one and a half hours, a bit blindly in the middle of the forest, when eventually we found it.

Contrary to what one might think, this plane is actually a film set that the production team abandoned in the woods for reasons unknown. The plane was featured in a 2017 short film titled “Maverick,” and you can find the trailer through this link.

The American plane swiftly became a sensation in urban exploration, prompting the town to remove it in 2022 due to high visitor numbers. Its vibrant presence will live on through photos.

While some see fog as nature's obstacle, photographers know it's actually nature's gift.

My beautiful friends 👋🏼

I was uncertain whether to share this post here or as a mindful photowalk post in Ascenzive Life, as the mention of fog, mist, and haze screams moooody to me.

I have always been very fascinated by the sceneries this brings in an image.
In my worldview, it’s an opportunity to be even more in the moment, intentional with your approach on photography. At least it for me.
I have been fortunate to help people to free their mind with coaching sessions that includes long walks, journaling and mindfulness, and even though almost every one of my photowalks is a meditation, I decided it should be published here as a photo project. This experience was my own coaching session.

(Unfortunately because I really love it) - Where I’m living, in Maastricht (Deep South of the Netherlands), it’s not so common to have such mist… until the other day(s)… I have taken the opportunity to have several walks for 3-4 days in a row to capture these moments and to reflect on my year in this new life.

I have been shooting in monochrome for some years now. While I still shoot in color too, I find that this kind of steamy mood has a particular vibe in black and white that color can’t match, because I particularly like the gradient of gray, which is exacerbated by the fog.

I love how fog softens all edges and creates layers of depth.
Distant objects fade into misty gray veils, while closer elements emerge like ghostly silhouettes.
Tree branches form delicate, dark tracery against the pearl-white sky.
Light behaves differently - streetlamps create glowing halos, and sunlight, if present, diffuses into a gentle, directionless illumination.

Although some may find this limiting or gloomy, fog can create:

• A sense of peaceful isolation, like being wrapped in a quiet blanket

• Mystery and romance, as the familiar world transforms into something more ethereal

• Intimate spaces, as the visible world shrinks to just what's nearby

• A meditative atmosphere that encourages introspection

• Subtle beauty in the way it reveals shapes and textures gradually

I have been a Fujifilm power user for many years now. Actually, when I think about it, my first Fujifilm camera was the FinePix S5100 (back in 2005, I believe). But back then, Fujifilm didn't have the beautiful film simulations that make these cameras so unique.

There are many Facebook Groups dedicated to it.

Today, however, I want to share with you a technique that allows you to save an unlimited number of film recipes into your camera.
In fact, normally you can save between 4 and 8 custom settings in Fujifilm cameras.

But often we would like to be able to get more of them for certain situations.

Settings for Streets, for Portraits, BNW only, Cinematic,.. You name it.

How?

All you need is Fujifilm’s Xapp, which you can download in your smartphone camera stores.

If you own a Fujifilm body, chances are that you already use the app to download your beautiful pictures on your phone to share them with the world.

Now open the app and check the middle “Backup/Restore” tab below.

This is precisely where you can back up your actual 7 Custom Settings (or 4, depending on the model) and name it accordingly.

Let's say you create 7 Custom Settings for Daylight Street, such as Portra, Ultramax, Gold 200, Superia, etc. All you need to do is save this "state" into the Xapp and name it.

Then, you repeat the process with another look, for instance, Low Light/Night Use, and save it again accordingly.

And so on…

Congratulations! You now have the amazing ability to save an unlimited number of settings for any occasion, giving you the freedom to customize and optimize your setups without any restrictions.

I’m also NOT working after 5pm and in the weekend, very occasionally if it’s needed (Clients schedule,..)
